Traditional Highland Handfasting
A traditional Highland handfast ceremony is a beautiful and symbolic ritual that celebrates the union of two people. It’s a Celtic tradition that dates back centuries and is often associated with Pagan, Druid and Wiccan practices. Usually it takes place by running water.
Couples ‘Tie the knot’ as lengths of cloth or ribbon are wrapped around their joined hands. This symbolises the binding of their two lives together. While it’s not legally binding in the same way as a civil or religious wedding, it holds deep spiritual and cultural significance.
Tie The Knot – Registrar Led Handfast Ceremony
Many registrars now also offer to perform a similar ceremony at the Atholl Palace which is a legal wedding. It will include the tying of the ribbons and cloths but does not include a guard of authentically dressed Highlanders. Let your chosen celebrant guide you in how a handfasting ceremony will work best for you.
