Outlander Filming Locations
If you have been caught in the spell binding and mystical world of Outlander either by screen or page visit some of the beautiful locations in Perthshire that inspired the creation. Be swept away into Claire and Jamie’s adventures as you marvel at the beautiful lands of Scotland.
An extremely popular location for Outlander fans is Craigh na Dun the fictional stone circle or Standing Stones used by Claire to time travel back in time by 200 years to Jacobite Scotland. Although the actual Standing Stones are fictional the filming location is real. The picturesque location where they filmed Craigh Na Dun is Kinloch Rannoch Moor in Perthshire. The Outlander standing stones location is based on the privately-owned Tullochcroisk working farm. This farm is named Rannoch Moor and can be found near the village of Kinloch Rannoch. The woodlands of Dunkeld House Hotel’s Estate that doubled as North Carolina’s wilderness in Season 4 of the tv show Outlander are located just a short drive from Atholl Palace Hotel and provides a new audio tour covering the spots within Perthshire and beyond.
Some of the other locations used within Perthshire are 18th Century highland town Kinloch Rannoch, where Claire and Frank spend their honeymoon in Season 1, Tibbermore Parish Church which appeared in ‘the Devils Mark’ episode in Season 1, where Claire and Geillis’s witchcraft trial took place and the Palace of Versailles gardens in Season 2 is the beautiful Drummond Castle Gardens in real life. Also used as filming location was Faskally Forest to portray the Indian Camp. A beautiful forest with varied tree types and known for its stunning foliage and colours throughout. Being just north of Pitlochry and 2 miles north from Atholl Palace Hotel it is not far from Kinloch Rannoch, the site used for the Stepping Stones.
